Students Helping in the Naturalization of Elders

Student Information

How do I participate?

There are two main ways to participate in Project SHINE:

  1. You can participate through a course at Emory that incorporates Project SHINE as a component of a Theory Practice Learning/Service Learning or Language Across the Curriculum Course. Your volunteer work in Project SHINE will be integrated into your course work. For example, you will bring observations and reflections from your experience in SHINE activities into dialogue with the academic subject matter of your course.

  2. You can also participate in Project SHINE strictly as a volunteer activity. There also will be opportunities for paid supervisor/coordinator positions and work study placements.

What will I do?

Project SHINE participants provide tutoring in English, literacy, and citizenship for at least 2 hours per week for 10 weeks to older immigrants and refugees at local community-based organizations.   This involves:

  • Attending two required trainings (one at the beginning of the semester and one a few weeks after beginning tutoring). We will teach you everything you need to know to help your learner.
  • Attending all the tutoring sessions (2 hours for 10 weeks).
  • Complete pre- and post-surveys at www.projectshine.org.
  • Sign in and out of SHINE notebook at site each time you tutor.
  • Attending one final reflection meeting.
  • Completing any academic work associated with Project SHINE as assigned by your professor. (If you are enrolled in the service-learning course.)

Am I qualified?

  • Are you proficient in English?
  • Are you interested in and do you enjoy people, especially those from other cultures?
  • Are you patient and flexible and do you have a good sense of humor?
  • Are you punctual and reliable?

If you answered yes to these questions, you are qualified! We will teach you everything you need to know to make your learner's dreams come true. Through group activities with other Project SHINE participants we will also help you fully appreciate the opportunities for personal growth and development this multicultural experience will provide for you.
